October 2009:
FLY/K-9 Lifesavers Happy Hour
YCDC met at Midtown Loft for a Happy Hour in mid-October to support FLY Youth and K-9 Lifesavers.
FLY strives to support teachers and school administrators by better connecting students and parents to their efforts through educational advocacy. FLY’s year-round, long-term approach matches students with volunteer mentors who empower them to be leaders and advocates. Our program augments each student’s academic learning until they graduate from high school and pursue higher education, vocational school or meaningful employment. FLY’s vision and program design is driven by youth-led decision-making.
K-9 Lifesavers saves dogs lives, who otherwise would not get a second chance. The organization does this through fostering homeless dogs, volunteering at adoption events, becoming adoption counselors, and transporting the dogs to and from events and appointments.
September 2009:
Bread for the City
YCDC volunteered to pack bags of food for the homeless and needy through Bread for the City.
The mission of Bread for the City is to provide vulnerable residents of Washington, DC, with comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services, in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. We recognize that all people share a common humanity, and that all are responsible to themselves and to society as a whole. Therefore, we promote the mutual collaboration of clients, volunteers, donors, staff, and other community partners to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and to rectify the conditions that perpetuate it.
